  4.     It is a relief finally to see that someone else believes
  5. athletes should not be given special treatment. When the late
  6. Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti banned Pete Rose for
  7. life from baseball, he was acknowledging that the man, although an
  8. idol to some, deserved to be punished (SPORT, Sept. 4).
  9. Unfortunately, it seems that professional athletes are treated
  10. leniently because they are our heroes. A double standard that puts
  11. athletes into an elitist category must cease.

  16.     Even to a visiting Australian unfamiliar with the tradition
  17. and conventions of baseball, the implications of a team manager
  18. betting on his own team, as Giamatti believed Rose did, are clear.
  19. In Australia, however, once down, Rose would not be kicked. Surely
  20. the coincidence of his child's birthday and the date he could apply
  21. for reinstatement to a beloved way of life could be viewed as a
  22. cause for celebration as easily as it was condemned as an
  23. assessment of the priorities in his life.
